Old roof gone and new one in place. All body panels fitted and aligned for fit, height and gap. All body trim needs to be pre-assembled before heading into next stage. Check back for further updates.

|
Body work is continuing on the rear quarter panels; leveling the panels due to GoodMark quality imperfections.

Camaro is mounted on rotisserie, polysurfacer applied, and ready to block out. Some panels are in primer stage. The owner has decided to have us sandblast the bottom of the car. He undercoated it after welding in the new panels, but the product used is peeling. After priming the cleaned surface we will caulk and seal all the joints as needed.

| The bottom of the car is sandblasted and stripped after it is determined the primer and undercoating used by the owner at home did not adhere properly. The body of the car is now in final primer stage as well as all body panels such as hood, fenders, doors and smaller pieces. The front frame section still needs to be stripped and that will be done next. There was actually so much area on the floor pan that we could not keep up with corrosion so we decided to prep the floor and frame as two projects. The floor now coated with a self-etching sealer, will be caulked with a polymer caulking at all joints and repainted with the semi-gloss black as instructed by the owner. These models used a tar/rubber based product on the floors as sound deadener. It was found that these coatings promoted rust by trapping water and absorbing moisture. Today the use of matting such as Dynamatte is typically used inside the car to keep it cool and reduce noise. The inside panels, floor and trunk also need to be stripped and painted. All you DIYs be sure to call us before you coat replaced panels. Some of the products used as primer in China are unstable. Undercoating is not a suitable rust-inhibitor. Adhesion needs to be considered in all coating operations.

Doors are painted inside - off the car - to reach all the areas. This is a color test also to confirm the correct color is being used and to obtain owner approval.

|
The Camaro floor inside and the front rails are sandblasted removing all the loose paint and finish. Remember, the owner applied a paint that did not adhere. The new product bonds well to etched metal.

The inside floor and frame are painted and an elastomeric caulking is applied at all seams to seal and protect from water and moisture, which would otherwise result in corrosion. This is as close to the factory process as we can get without dip tanks and eletrostatic application of primer. The floors inside will be covered next with Dyna-Mat sound and heat insulating material. The effect will be a cooler and quieter interior.

The Camaro is ready for painting. The car is washed and cleaned and has traveled down a long road toward paint. The body is set up and all parts are suspended in place and painted as they would be if hung on the car. Each part is drop coated and tacked and checked as the coats of paint are applied. Once the base coat is applied, a clear coat is applied and then baked to a hardness conducive to durability color holdout. Too hard will cause cracking or peeling. Too soft will allow uneven holdout. Our team and NAPA Martin Senour paint system has produced another jewel sure to turn heads.

All painted and ready to assemble. Our part of the project is winding down. The doors and fenders will be assembled and aligned for placement of the stripes and black-out areas. Each panel will be wet sanded and polished to achieve our finish standard. A few remaining pieces need to be painted after fitting of finished panels. Hinges and doors fitted and aligned in preparation for components to be added to internal doors by others. The interior will be painted to the owner's specification in color and gloss level since he is making some changes to the original to suit his own taste. Depth and glow of the color highlights the golds and green reflective quality of this attractive color.

The Camaro 396 SS/RS has come a long way and as our part of the project winds down the assembly work remaining will take a long time to complete. It's estimated an additional 400 hours of labor will be required to complete the assembly excluding research and time required to locate and confirm the quality of parts and to confirm correctness of reproduction parts. That 400 hours does not include rebuilding of engine-transmission or other mechanical and electrical components. New Parts: Just because the ad says OEM parts, it does not mean the parts are a perfect fit. Hours can be spent to fit and assemble just one door handle. The owner has at minimum, a year long assembly at home required to complete the commitment of the project. Remember, each part will need to be cleaned, checked, fitted and assembled in proper order. Should the order of assembly go astray, backtracking can absorb hours of time. Many reproduction parts need to be trimmed or adapted to fit.

The Camaro is winding down. All the trim is fitted and each color-coordinated part is painted and test assembled. Even the rocker moldings are fitted and will be removed for transport. Doors are fitted and weather-strips attached however today's new improved oversize weather-strips will be tight and will require time to collapse. Refitting the doors and trunk will be needed in the form of adjusting strikers in a month or two. The car will be cleaned and final buffing detailed. When the car is ready to ship we plan to remove the nose-fenders and hood as an assembly as the owner wants to install the engine and drive-train free of worry of damage to new paint. We will assist him with install at a later time. Interior and doors will be assembled by the owner. Glass and all electrical will be by others. final Pictures to follow.

The Camaro stripes are laid out in preparation for painting. The trunk hinges are detailed and painted after!!!! they are bolted in place and adjustments made. I see so many cars that after the restoration the bolt and adjustment marks don't get repaired. The Stripes are typical of this model however the owner has selected to paint them on instead of using the decals on the market. He also selected his own gloss level by looking at samples we made for him on spray out card. Once he approves the gloss we move on. Message: Rich...We need the SS emblems for the front fenders (under the Camaro emblem) and a layout stencil to locate the rear body SS emblem see if you have or order!!

Stripes are complete and un-masked. The trunk area and interior panels and dash are painted. Buffing will continue until all the panels are polished to a level acceptable to the customer. Once the car is done we invite the customer to return for a final detailing on the car finish as assembly will leave small marks and surface scratches. Moldings and trim will be fitted and pre-drilled as they arrive. we are still missing a few things. We would like to install the window molding clips in the front and rear windows at this time also.

It's time for the Camaro to go home. It's loaded onto a flatbed and on it's way to completion as the owner will have the job of final assembly. The car sparkled outside on the bright first day of spring. The owner was a pleasure to work with and we enjoyed the opportunity to work with him and this special car. Look for him at car shows around town.
